Carrie Thomson-Casey MAPS

Clinical Psychologist

PRIVATE CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY AND COUNSELLING SERVICES.  Masters trained and twenty five years experience in psychological intervention and counselling. Working with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma and coping with demands in everyday life. Therapeutic techniques include supportive counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, psycho-education, and schema therapy. Initial assessment focuses on your experiences, your story and symptoms that you are experiencing. At times we may identity how some unhelpful “rules” about yourself and your world may feel like you are stuck. We will explore new ways of looking at past experiences. Sessions will also focus on managing symptoms – we will discuss techniques in session and then you apply these strategies as “homework” outside of sessions.  We will set agreed goals and work towards those goals together.

SPECIAL SERVICES FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Specialty areas include supporting health professionals (GPs, medical specialists, registrars, psychologists, allied health and complementary medicine practitioners) through counselling and supervision. Working together to minimise incidence of burnout and enjoy their work.  Services include counselling, supervision and training/workshops.

NUTRITION SERVICES Also providing naturopathic and nutrition services.

NB Clients can access Carrie as either a Clinical Psychologist OR as a Naturopath/Nutritionist specialising in Mental Health. Psychologists in Australia can only treat clients from one profession (Australian Psychological Society Ethical Guidelines) and not the integration of both disciplines.

Based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

*** Carrie is not currently accepting any new referrals ***

/ReviewCarrie consults from her practice at Cotton Tree on the Sunshine Coast.   Carrie has worked in private and public health settings since 1994 with experience including the disability sector, tertiary rehabilitation, sexual assault and violence prevention, and a broad range of client mental health presentations. Carrie works with young people and adults requesting treatment/therapy for anxiety (such as panic attacks, excessive worry, social anxiety, obsessional thinking, separation anxiety), depression, difficulty coping and stress related issues, workplace injury and burnout, weight management, and health and lifestyle changes. Endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist by AHPRA is the recognition of additional formal education and ongoing discipline specific professional development activities.

Carrie utilises a range of evidence based therapies, including (but not exclusively) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy, and integrates these approaches with the health and mental health needs of each client.  Clients work with Carrie to set realistic treatment goals and work towards these agreed goals together.

REFERRAL

Clients can self refer (a mental health care plan is not required), however we will discuss whether this private practice setting is most likely to meet your mental health needs. At initial assessment it is important that consent to consult with a GP around your care is obtained.  Clients can self refer without a Mental Health Care Plan (not eligible for a Medicare rebate – check with your private health insurance if you have coverage). Referrals are also received for Worker’s Compensation, other third party referrers/insurers and from organisations referring their employees.

Referral can also be via your GP with a Mental Health Treatment Plan – this plan allows you to claim a rebate for up to ten sessions per calendar year. GPs can fax referrals to 07 3539 9858 or send referrals via Medical Objects (your GP will know what this is).

### Naturopathic/Nutrition consults are conducted separately from psychology referrals and Medicare rebated sessions. ### Psychologists in Australia can only treat clients from one profession (Australian Psychological Society Ethical Guidelines) and not the integration of two disciplines, such as Clinical Psychology and Naturopathy, at one time, with the same client. ###  Translation… You can see Carrie as either a Clinical Psychologist OR as a Naturopath/Nutritionist… but not both at one time.

Naturopathic/Nutrition services Carrie has also completed qualifications in Naturopathy and Nutrition with an interest in assessing and making recommendations in regard to nutrient and herbal interventions for anxiety, coping with stress and other lifestyle related measures to support well being.

This practice is not resourced to meet the needs for clients requiring care for acute mental health issues, addiction or gambling, or issues relating to offending.
